Facts About Franklinton
- Located 61 miles north of New Orleans, the town's name
is pronounced locally as "Frank-lin-ton" or "Frank-il-ton.
- The Town of Franklinton was founded in 1819.
- Franklinton became the parish seat of Washington Parish
on February 10, 1821, two years after the parish was carved
out from St. Tammany Parish.
- The Washington Parish Free Fair, said to be the largest
free fair in the United States, is held in October of each
year in Franklinton.
- The state's most impressive collection of log cabins is
the Mile Branch Settlement located on the Washington Parish
Fairgrounds in Franklinton.
- The movie "Dead Man Walking" was based on a murder that
took place just south of Franklinton at Frickie's Cave.
